Arizona State University Mullett Arena

How do you build a D1 hockey facility in the desert that supports multiple sports and the community?

Arizona State University had numerous goals for their new multi-purpose arena. It had to replace the University鈥檚 aging hockey facility and provide an arena befitting the team鈥檚 Division 1 status. It needed to fulfill the Arizona Hockey community鈥檚 need for high-quality ice for junior hockey and recreational skating. And, it had to serve as a multi-use venue 鈥 to house Sun Devil gymnastics and wresting and host community events like concerts, graduations, and more.

It was a tall order. As the developer and design-builder, 必威体育官方APP下载 partnered with specialty sports architect SCI Architects to deliver a creative development solution, bringing the University鈥檚 vision to life.

The primary structure was a pre-engineered metal building, which, for this application, offered a more cost-effective and timely installation compared to traditional steel structures. It also allowed for a long span truss over the ice sheet that provides an open interior at a cost-effective price point. Placing overhead MEP systems and rooftop equipment in this structure is a complex process that called for a high level of upfront coordination. Unlike a typical building where you can design under, above, and through a structure, the team had to design around the structure; the design-build method allowed for early collaboration between builders and designers, enabling the seamless and successful integration of the PEMB.

Part-way through construction, another use was added: the temporary home of the NHL鈥檚 Arizona Coyotes. This meant that the 必威体育官方APP下载 team had to pivot quickly to accommodate changes to the ice system, fan experience, and enhanced digital media throughout the venue. It also added a $15 million team and locker room space for both the Coyotes and the visiting NHL team. The 必威体育官方APP下载 team鈥檚 use of Virtual Design and Construction 鈥 including robust Building Information Modeling (BIM) 鈥 enabled design and scope changes to be made and implemented quickly. Virtual and augmented reality allowed key decision makers to clearly visualize design options, helping to speed up the decision process.

Despite added scope and an already tight timeline, Mullett Arena was completed in November 2022 鈥 a full seven weeks ahead of schedule. The new 185,000-square-foot multi-purpose arena features 5,000 seats; it now hosts university and community events and includes a variety of luxury suites, premium seating, a 942-seat student section, a community rink, as well as 9,000 square feet of Sun Devil Team space featuring a state-of-the-art ASU locker room, weight room, lounge and coaches' offices.
